Black eyed Susan

More yellow....  like sunshine.   Rudbeckia fulgida - Astraceae family.   Fulgida means shiny or glittering in latin.

Yellow flowers with coarse dark green foliage.  Gardeners feel it looks best when grown in a big circle around a tree.  I can imagine the pretty picture it would make.  But even otherwise the flowers look pretty and they have this brown-black centre and thus the name Black-eyed Susan.

Calendula

Common name: Calendula, Pot Marigold, English Marigold  

These are bright yellow and orange flowers belonging to the Sunflower family.  They look similar to the Marigold flower - the most popular flower this season in India adorning doorways and garlands.

Pot marigolds are said to bloom at the beginning of the month and thus got its name from Kalendae, Latin for first day of the month. The petals of the flower are known to have medicinal properties.

Dahlberg Daisy

 

Also commonly known as - Shooting Star, Golden Fleece

The cheerful daisy type of flowers with the needle like leaves is ideal for ground cover and hanging baskets.   Native to Texas and Mexico.  This one seen in Lodhi Gardens, New Delhi.  The profusion of yellow flowers make it very attractive.It has a trailing habit.  Grows to about one foot or less and spreads wider.  The leaves when crushed have lemony fragrance

Nemesia

Common Name - Nemesia, Pouch nemesia, Capejewels

Nemesia flowers are originally native to South Africa. Seen in colours of white, lilac, red apart from the orange and yellow ones seen here.

Some even think it resembles pansies because of the lines that are seen on the flowers.

Violet or Viola

 

Violet - flowers that are found in colours other than violet also.  Yellow, blue, white and cream.  Seen here are yellow flowers with fine streaks on them.   There are flowers that have petals which have blotches on them and these are the pansies.  Belonging to the same family.

Viola flowers are edible.  Newly opened flowers are used to decorate food.  Young leaves can be consumed raw or cooked.  Essences have been extracted from the flowers too.

Nasturtium

Common name: Nasturtium, Garden nasturtium, Indian cress

These were the first flowers I saw as I walked into Lodhi gardens, New Delhi.  In yellow and orange, they made a pretty sight as they swayed in the breeze.  I loved the leaves as much if not more than the flower.

The leaves are also used in salads and the seeds as food.

Ragged Mallow

An erect shrub. The flower is solitary at the tips of branches.  The seeds are furrowed and ridged. Leaves are ragged .  Found this growing wild outside the wall of a house that had a well kept garden.  The flower was so pretty that I had to take a picture.

Yellow Bells

Common name: Yellow bells, Yellow trumpet, Yellow-Elder

Bright yellow flowers. Trumpet shaped, and are in clusters at the tips of branches.  The branches bend with the weight. Flowers from April upto spring.  A shrub or a small tree.  Has a bean type capsule that ripens to a brown colour.

Australian Gold Vine

Common name: Australian Gold Vine, Shower of gold climber, Vining Galphimia, Vining Milkweed

Golden yellow star shaped flowers that grow on a vine.  Has red stamens. This is the first time I have seen this vine.  The flowers seem very delicate apparently because of the lovely subdued yellow colour.

The four pillars on the outside of the pavillion had four different climbers.

Pumpkin family

I am sure this belongs to the Gourd family.  But which one?  Hopefully I shall see the fruit sometime ( it is not growing in my house).  Correction - could be the pumpkin as Swaram has pointed out - same family though - Cucurbitaceae

Copper Pod

This particular tree has its branches chopped off almost every three months, since they brush against the telephone and power lines.  To the extent that only the trunk with a few branches are left.  But within no time, the branches grow, the leaves appear and it is in bloom all over again. For me, it appears to fight for survival.

Common name: Copperpod, Rusty shield-bearer

  Copperpod also called yellow flame tree.  It has fern like leaves.  A native of Sri Lanka, the Andamans, the Malay peninsula and North Australia. The yellow blooms are very attractive.  The tree to the right of it ( not in the picture) finished blooming and is devoid of flowers, while this one began and added colour to the neighbourhood. The name `Copper Pod’ comes from the coppery-red seed cases that are seen in profusion.  And yes, the ground below the tree is strewn with these flowers.

Yellow Dot or Nettle Leaved Wedelia?

Common name: Yellow Dots, Creeping daisy, Wedelia

Creeping herb. The flower is yellow daisy like.  Makes a good ground cover as seen here.  Supposed to be ideal for hanging flower baskets too.

Indian Laburnum

Common name: Amaltas, Golden shower tree, Indian Laburnum

A beautiful tree.  The flowers are described as chains, bunches of grapes... they look so different from most other flowers and are so attractive.   The fruits are dark-brown cylindrical pods, that  hold the flattish, brown seeds (up to 100 in one pod).

Rain Lily

These pretty yellow lilies were blooming in the pot in the balcony the other day.  They look so beautiful.  But last only for a couple of days. 

Then they dry and set many seeds, which can simply be shaken back into the pot for it to grow back to pretty lilies later sometime.

Allamanda

Common Name - Trumpet Vine

A tropical shrub or vine.  The genus is named after Dr. F. Allamand, a professor of Natural History. This plant is a native of Brazil.  It is a fast growing vine that needs to be trimmed.  It flowers almost all the year.  The leathery leaves are lancelike, pointed, and may either be opposite or in whorls of three or four. These are seen in different colours.

Golden Champa

This variety of Champa has golden yellow flowers. A large evergreen tree.  The flowers have a lovely fragrance.  Almost missed this flower.  Will go back when it is in full bloom and take the picture.

Lantana

A common sight - a flower that grows wild.  Quite known for the odour.  But the flowers are so beautiful and multi coloured.

Common name: Lantana

Common lantana is a rugged evergreen shrub . The species will grow to 6 ft high with some varieties able to clamber vinelike up supports to greater heights with the help of support. Stems and leaves are covered with rough hairs and emit an unpleasant aroma when crushed. The small flowers are held in clusters (called umbels) that are typically 1-2 in across. Flower color ranges from white to yellow, orange to red, pink to rose in unlimited combinations, in addition the flowers usually change in color as they age. A lantana may look orange from a distance but the flowerhead is examined at close range it consists of individual white, yellow and red flowers that blend when viewed from afar.

Mexican Oleander

Common name: Mexican oleander, Yellow Oleander, Lucky Nut

This is a tree commonly seen in most places in India.  And the fruit of the tree that is green when immature, first turns red and then black. It has a brown seed inside that is known as the lucky nut, but one is not so lucky if these pods are ingested for they are known to be toxic. So beware!

Mexican oleander is a large shrub or a small tree, up to 10 to 20 feet tall . Tip of leafs are pointed with a dark green color. Flowers are generally yellow, but there are varieties with white and orange flowers too. Fruit is small, containing two to four flat seeds. If ingested may experience pain in the mouth and lips, may also develop vomiting, cramping, abdominal pain, nausea and bradycardia shortly after ingestion. Mexican oleander is native to tropical America.

Chrysanthemum

Picture taken at the Baha'i Temple - New Delhi - the structure itself is beautiful, and the what seemed as millions of chrysanthemum flowers in full bloom was just breathtaking.

Common name: Chrysanthemum, Chandramukhi.

Irregular Incurve: These are the giants of the chrysanthemum world. Chrysanthemums have dark green, deeply lobed and aromatic leaves with soft grey undersides.



They come in a wide variety of flower shapes, sizes and colors, from dark burgundy, bronzes and oranges, to lavenders, light pastel pinks, and whites. Yellow or white chrysanthemum flowers are boiled to make a sweet drink in some parts of Asia. The resulting beverage is known simply as "chrysanthemum tea" .
